Wednesday Wink – Dare to Defy: The Call to Courage in Your Beauty Business

Last night I declared an evening to Netflix and chill. After hearing rave reviews, I chose to watch Brene Brown’s advice on vulnerability from the Call to Courage where Brene discusses what it takes to choose courage over comfort in a culture defined by scarcity, fear, and uncertainty. What does this have to do with the beauty business you ask? Everything. Day in and day out we are continually being asked to choose between comfort and courage. Whether you wear the hat of an artist, business owner or employee – navigating your highest good takes courage. Courage puts you in a place where showing up as your most authentic self is truly the only path that leads to sustainable joy.

Biggest Takeaways from the Call to Courage

The Call to Courage has some deeper lessons that can apply to your beauty business! Here are some takeaways that you can implement in your business for some effective and positive change.

1. Feeling Vulnerable is a Reminder to Practice Gratitude

According to Brene, when faced with a joyful moment, we often get afraid. The people in the world that are able to lean into joy are also met with the feeling of fear. You should take this moment of fear in with gratitude instead of with caution. Don't wait for the other shoe to drop –instead, count your blessings.

2. Changing Your Perception

The other great takeaway I want to share was Brene’s suggestion for altering our perception. As humans, we don't like to be in uncertainty and tend to make up stories in our minds to fill in gaps. These stories are usually not the truth and can lead to miscommunications with the people we care about the most. Brene’s tip is to communicate when it matters. You can practice this by utilizing the following statement about how you perceive people and situations: “The story I am making up is_______”. This statement is freeing and creates space for the truth to be revealed, evoking deeper intimacy with all parties involved. Whether it be a creative collaboration or day to day employee management, clear communication is key for everyone to be on the same page. This dialog prompt is extremely helpful to weed out the stories we make up to protect ourselves.
