After attending a lash conference in March, the question came up - time and time again - about retention. What are the causes of poor lash retention?
There were some very educated and talented lash professionals talking on the subject. Each speaker had their own ideas to contribute. I have to say, it was great to be there and acquire so much knowledge! In this post, I am going to share some tips that I learned, and have found useful since. I hope you will too. :)

Hello! I use the wash & wink, rinse before fills. Your tip for better retention says use after fill, but how soon after filling should wash & wink +rinse be done?

I can tell you from personal experience that the ammonia from the hair color and lighter can mess with the glue. An air purifier may help. If you continue to have issues, you may need to find a room or area away from the hair stylist.

Very informative tips. Just to add up to your list. Brush your lashes when it is needed. Over brushing can result in faster fallout due to pulling and tugging.
Hi. I lash inside a hair salon where chemicals and dyes are used often. It’s my only option at the moment. Can you suggest some ways I can solve retention problems that I may be having. Should I purchase an air purifier??
I like that you mentioned shaking the glue for about a minute before applying it. This should help ensure that the compounds are bonded appropriately. I don’t get to notice if my wife does this on a regular basis, but I would definitely remind her about it. Thanks.

Fitness competitors have unique challenges. I have found that if you wash the lashes after your fill, you have better retention. Reference my Wednesday Wink about lash washing. However, your fitness clients may need to come in more frequently. They can have beautiful lashes but it will require more dedication to caring for them at home.
I can totally feel your pain on the heat issue. I’m in Arizona and we are coming up on 119 degrees. Getting in and out of hot cars and just plain heat wreaks havoc with the adhesive. Again my clients will need to come in more frequently for touch ups during this period. Communicate with your clients that it is just temporary.

There are so many things you can do to help build your business. Social media is great! Make sure you have a website that showcases your work and post frequently on Face Book, Instagram and don’t forget to have your business cards with you always!

What about clients that are fitness competitors and are often sweating and in the sauna? I have so many clients that love the lash extensions but feel like it’s a waste of time because they are always working out, sweating and sometimes have to be in extreme heat situations for training.
Hi Renee,
We now recommend that you wait a full 5 minutes after you complete your set or fill before you “wash” the lashes. We want to give the glue some time to surface set before we add anything to the lashes. Too soon and you create Blooming, which can leave a white film on the glue. I hope this answered your question.
