Make It Up Monday Wonderful World of Neck Rings

Let's go global and take a look at some more OUTstanding beauty trends from across the world. While researching this topic and respecting all cultures, there are moments when I honestly have to wonder. For instance, Neck Rings.?.?.? In some African/Padaung (Thailand) cultures they are used to decorate the neck and function as an attractive accessory. Within these cultures the rings reflect wealth and status (e.g. if you are married). But’s a different twist to, “Put a ring on it.” Neck Rings actually push the ribs and collar bones down so they are compressed making it hard to breathe but offering the illusion of 'neck stretching'. They are made from spiral metal coils that have been worn by men and women throughout history for beauty and status. While looking odd or uncomfortable, they do make for a stunning visual. Tradition is the hallmark of these tribes so although their version of beauty may give some of us pause, it’s also an inspirational a rich way to stay connected to the roots of heritage. A heritage that is being reimagined across fashion and gracing the covers of our most respected editorials.
